Department of Colorectal Surgery
Clinical Shadowing Intern
During my clinical experience at the University of Liverpool, I shadowed colorectal surgeons and observed advanced procedures involving colorectal disease management. I followed patients through preoperative assessment, surgery, and postoperative recovery, gaining exposure to clinical decision-making within the UK National Health Service.
I observed close coordination among surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied health professionals. This experience emphasized the importance of teamwork, efficiency, and patient-centered care within a large public healthcare system.
Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine
Clinical Shadowing Intern
At UCSF, I shadowed orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists, gaining exposure to a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and surgical interventions. I observed procedures including fracture repairs, ligament reconstructions, and joint surgeries, with particular attention to biomechanics, implant selection, and surgical planning.
Beyond the operating room, I followed patient evaluations and postoperative care, learning how imaging, physical examination, and functional goals guide treatment decisions. This experience strengthened my understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of precision, rehabilitation, and patient communication in restoring mobility and quality of life.
Department of Bariatric & Obesity Surgery
Clinical Shadowing Intern
At Lenox Hill Hospital, I shadowed a bariatric surgery team and observed procedures addressing obesity and metabolic disease. I gained insight into surgical techniques as well as the comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach required for long-term patient success.
I observed how surgeons, dietitians, and mental health professionals collaborate throughout preoperative evaluation, surgery, and recovery. This experience highlighted the importance of holistic care, patient education, and long-term follow-up in managing complex chronic conditions.
Clinical Shadowing Experience
At Medical Park Hospital, I gained early clinical exposure across multiple departments while observing patient care in a hospital setting. I had the opportunity to observe the organ transport council, learning about coordination and time-sensitive decision-making in transplantation medicine.
I also interacted directly with patients, including pediatric oncology and rehabilitation patients, supporting them through academic activities, mobility exercises, and daily care. This experience deepened my understanding of empathy, communication, and the human aspects of medicine beyond clinical procedures.
